Every now and then you come across a piece of content that makes you stop, pause blinking, read on and hit the arrow of Share button. It could be long, short, well-researched or well written, or even not that well written. But what matters is, something in it manages you claw into you in a way that feels too real to ignore. Like it named something you’d been carrying around without language for. Let’s zoom into our brains for a bit.

The human brain processes roughly 11 million bits of information per second. It consciously registers about 50. Everything else gets filtered out before it reaches your awareness by a system that evolved not to help you learn things, but to keep you alive. The brain’s core job is threat detection and resource acquisition. Everything else is secondary. Which means, attention is not given. It is triggered.

When you scroll past piece of content, it’s not always a because you made a conscious decision to ignore it, but because your amygdala processed it and flagged it as irrelevant. Your brain just decided it wasn’t a survival signal. Ideas that spread aren’t better ideas. They’re ideas that successfully masquerade as survival signals.

According to research, there are three neurochemical states that cause a person to share information.

1: Norepinephrine: This floods your brain in response to anything that feels novel, threatening or emotionally charged—working like an alertness chemical asking you to dial in and listen closely. This is released when you read/view a piece of content that feels urgent. It raises your heart rate slightly and makes you lean forward. This is why contrarian ideas spread faster than confirmatory ones. A piece that tells you everything you believe is correct creates no arousal response. A piece that says everything you believe about this is wrong triggers an immediate norepinephrine spike. In content, we call this a Negative Hook.

2: Dopamine: This is known as the pleasure chemical but fun fact…you get way more dopamine release in anticipation than actual pleasure (does gambling ring bells?) This is why a well-constructed thread is more effective than a well-constructed essay. Each line is a micro-promise. Each section break creates a dopamine loop: partial information that makes the brain expect a resolution. The reader doesn’t consciously know why they keep reading. Their dopamine system does. Ideas that are 80% familiar and 20% surprising have what psychologists call the “optimal gap”. They produce the strongest dopamine response. Recognition plus novelty. The brain lights up.

3: Oxytocin: the chemical released in moments of trust, physical touch, sustained eye contact, sense of belonging and, drumroll please: storytelling. Research has found that narrative-driven content causes the brain to release oxytocin, which directly increases the likelihood of prosocial behavior including sharing (POV reels?). When someone shares a piece of content, they’re not just distributing information. They’re using it as a social signal: I am the kind of person who understands this.
This is why ideas that spread are almost always ideas with identity stakes. They don’t just inform. They tell people something about who they are for understanding it.

The majority of content fails not because it’s badly written but because it triggers none of these responses. Predictability doesn’t trigger arousal. What gives everything away in the first line doesn’t create anticipation. What feels unrelatable doesn’t create social bonding or feel anything about themselves. Most content is written to be comprehensive. The brain doesn’t care about comprehensive. It cares about something being urgent, surprising, and identity-confirming.
